Parameter analyzer

Parameter analyzer Icon
A parameter analyzer is an all-in-one unit that integrates power supplies, voltage meters, current meters, switching matrices, and LCR meters. It enables a thorough evaluation of voltage, current, resistance, and capacitance. Parameter analyzers are widely utilized in the semiconductor industry device optimization, ensuring that semiconductor components are fine-tuned for high performance and reliability. The functionalities of a parameter analyzer depend on the installed measurement cards, with Source-Measure Unit (SMU) cards allowing for precise DC measurements. Notable models like the Keithley 4200A-SCS and Keysight B1500, both supported by platforms like SweepMe!, exemplify the pinnacle of parameter analyzer technology, offering semiconductor professionals sophisticated tools for accurate measurements and comprehensive characterization of semiconductor devices.

What can a Parameter Analyzer measure?

Measuring cards: Depending on the installed measuring cards, parameter analyzers can perform the following measurements

C-V measurement assesses the relationship between the voltage applied to a semiconductor device and the resulting capacitance.

I-V characteristics analyze the relationship between the current flowing through a semiconductor device and the voltage applied across it.

C-f analysis Capacitance measuring cards allow for C-f analysis, studying how capacitance changes with signal frequency. This is crucial in RF and high-frequency applications, providing insights into dynamic semiconductor behavior.

C-t profiling: Capacitance measuring cards enable C-t profiling, characterizing capacitance changes over time. This is valuable for understanding time-dependent behavior in transient responses and dynamic operations.

AC Impedance: Capacitance measuring cards support AC impedance measurements, analyzing semiconductor device impedance under alternating current conditions. This aids in optimizing circuits for specific frequency ranges.

Transient Waveform Capture: Waveform acquiring cards facilitate transient waveform capture, recording, and analyzing voltage or current signals' temporal behavior.

Pulsed IV curves: Pulse measure cards enable the assessment of pulsed IV curves, studying semiconductor devices' characteristics under pulsed conditions. This is vital for applications like high-speed digital circuits and pulsed laser diodes.

(Fast-)NBTI or (Fast-)PTBI stress measurements assess the impact of temperature and bias conditions on semiconductor devices over short periods. Crucial for predicting device reliability, this is especially valuable in advanced semiconductor technologies with accelerated aging studies.

Frequency capacitance measurements involve assessing the capacitance of a device at different frequencies, this specification in a parameter analyzer indicates its ability to accurately assess capacitance under varying frequency conditions.

Which measurement modes exist?

DC: Measures device characteristics under steady-state voltage conditions. The parameter analyzer provides precise measurements of voltage, current, and resistance, offering insights into a device's behavior in static conditions.

AC: Assesses device behavior under varying voltage conditions, typically at different frequencies, this mode is particularly valuable for studying dynamic responses in semiconductor devices, such as transistors or capacitors, as it captures how the device behaves when subjected to alternating voltage signals. AC measurements are essential for applications where devices operate in changing electrical environments or high-frequency circuits.

I-V/C-V Multi-Switch Module (CVIV): Enables seamless switching between current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurement modes.

Time Domain Measurement Mode: Analyzes device response over time, capturing transient behavior. This mode provides insights into how a device reacts to changes in input signals, making it valuable for studying dynamic events, transient responses, and the overall time-dependent behavior of semiconductor components.

Frequency Domain Measurement Mode: Studies device behavior in the frequency domain, assessing frequency-dependent characteristics, this mode is particularly important in applications involving high-frequency circuits, radiofrequency (RF) devices, or any scenario where understanding the device's response to varying frequencies is critical for optimal performance.

Arbitrary waveform and pulse generation: Allows for custom waveform and pulse creation, simulating diverse operating scenarios for comprehensive device assessment, This capability is invaluable for mimicking real-world conditions, testing devices under different signal profiles, and optimizing performance in specific applications.

Parameter analyzer application fields

Semiconductor Device Characterization: Parameter analyzers find extensive application in semiconductor device characterization to measure and analyze critical parameters such as voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, and other characteristics, providing valuable insights for optimizing semiconductor devices.

Integrated Circuit (IC) Testing: In IC testing, parameter analyzers are indispensable for verifying the performance and reliability of individual components within integrated circuits. They ensure that ICs meet specifications and function as intended in diverse applications, from consumer electronics to complex computing systems.

Materials Science and Research: Parameter analyzers are essential tools in materials science and research, enabling the characterization of electrical properties in various materials.

What are important specifications?

I-V measure resolution: A higher I-V measure resolution allows for a more detailed and accurate analysis of a device's behavior under varying voltage conditions, providing valuable insights into its electrical characteristics and performance.

Sampling rate: The sampling rate in a parameter analyzer refers to how quickly the instrument acquires data points during measurements. A higher sampling rate allows for a more accurate and detailed representation of fast-changing signals, ensuring that rapid variations in current or voltage are captured with precision.
